New .cpa Domain to Provide More Trust and Brand Recognition

The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and its business technology arm, CPA.com, have created a new restricted internet domain especially for CPAs called .cpa. The domains are for sale in an initial rollout to CPA firms through Oct. 31 at domains.cpa, and a later offering will be available to individually licensed CPAs in January.

Those licensed CPA firms that apply early will be able to register their existing .com domain using .cpa and will be notified by November. Later, applicants will be able to apply for other domains of their choice. Applicants may also apply for as many domains as they prefer. Once accepted, however, firms must use the domain. The cost to register for a standard .cpa domain is $225 per year.

The use of the restricted domain comes at a time when organizations are increasingly turning to specific domains for trusted information and resources as opposed to the more widely used .com or other domains. According to the AICPA, using .cpa is a “new level of distinction and security” for an accounting firm. It is harder for phishing, malware and ransomware schemes to infiltrate since .cpa is a restricted domain and requires verification.

“.cpa is a big win for our profession. It has both security and branding benefits. Today, trust is paramount, and the fact that the domain can be restricted to individual CPAs and licensed CPA firms is extremely valuable. It can also help firms cut through all the noise and clutter online,” said Jim Bourke, CPA.CITP, CFF, CGMA, partner at Withum and past president of the NJCPA.

“CPA firms should embrace this new way to differentiate themselves,” added Ralph Albert Thomas, CPA (DC), CGMA, CEO and executive director at the NJCPA. “It’s a great way to sell their services and make their brand stand out, which is becoming increasingly necessary as CPAs distinguish their status as trusted advisors to their clients.”

Filling out the application is easy. Not sure how to switch from a previous domain name to .cpa or what the process involves? Find answers here:
