How to Leverage your Firm's Human Capital

In this session Howard Matalon, Partner in charge of employment practices at Oleander Feldman, will cover a variety of human resources topics not only to protect your firm, but also to get the most from a company's most valuable resource: its Human Capital. Some best practices and topics that will be covered:

  • The importance of updating employment manuals regularly
  • Performance reviews
  • Hiring and onboarding new employees
  • Compensation and benefits
  • Paid time off and leave


Controllers, chief financial officers, budget directors, assistant controllers, accounting managers or senior staff with a substantial responsibility for the above functions regardless of formal title working at for-profit companies or nonprofit organizations. Sales representatives are not permitted to attend.


Attendees will have 60 minutes to discuss topics, ask questions, compare notes and share best practices with other controllers and CFOs in an informal setting. There is no cost to attend.


Topics discussed are determined by the attendees. Sample topics include:

  • State and local taxes
  • Insurance: P&C, E&O, D&O
  • Real estate: leases, moves
  • Payroll
  • Employee benefits

Howard A. Matalon is a partner of the firm Oleander Feldman in charge of the Employment Practices Group. Howard is an accomplished legal advisor with over 25 years of experience offering precision guidance and cost-effective solutions to the New Jersey business community in Human Capital Management. He has a proactive approach to employment law that maximizes the enterprise value of the workforce for business owners by addressing and resolving issues in every aspect of the employee life cycle: hiring, integration, retention, elimination, and separation.

Howard routinely counsels his clients on a wide range of human resources issues, including employee hiring practices, workplace harassment, discrimination, and whistleblowing, as well as worker status, classification, and exemption. He also routinely coaches senior executives in their management of crisis situations.

Howard was formerly a partner of Buchanan Ingersoll and Hale and Dorr LLP where he managed the commercial litigation department of the Princeton office. Howard received his Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from Brandeis University and his J.D. from Boston University Law School, cum laude, where he was Note Editor of the Boston University Law Review. He is admitted to practice in New Jersey.
