New Jersey Society of CPAs Names John M. Szczomak, CPA, of Smolin, Lupin & Co., President for 2025/26

ROSELAND, N.J. — The New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJCPA) welcomed John M. Szczomak, CPA, member of the firm at Smolin, Lupin & Co., LLC, as president for the 2025/26 term. Szczomak replaced June M. Toth, CPA, CFF, CITP, CGMA, principal at WilkinGuttenplan, on June 1.

Szczomak has given tremendous service to the NJCPA, where he’s been a member since 1990. He has participated in the Cooperation with Bankers Committee, Healthcare Committee, Financial Services Resource Group and Accounting & Auditing Standards Interest Group, and he served as NJCPA trustee, treasurer and secretary as well as a New Jersey CPA Political Action Committee Trustee, on the Essex Chapter Board and as an NJCPA Scholarship Fund Trustee.

Szczomak has been at Smolin for more than 38 years, after interning there initially and graduating from William Paterson University. In his current capacity, Szczomak and his team handle high-net-worth, healthcare, retail and professional services, concentrating primarily on tax. He is also on the board of the Fighting Children’s Cancer Foundation and chair of the Finance Committee at St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church in Paterson. Szczomak was past president of the New Jersey State Elks Association. He resides in Totowa with his wife, Jody.

As NJCPA president, Szczomak plans to focus on the CPA pipeline challenges and encouraging more people to enter accounting as well as mentoring the younger generation. “The more people put time into mentoring, the better our profession will be,” he explained.

“We are pleased to welcome John as president and are very excited by his enthusiasm to connect with younger professionals and inform them about this great profession. Mentoring is important in all fields, but it is particularly needed in accounting to explain the many opportunities that are available to CPAs,” said Aiysha (AJ) Johnson, MA, IOM, CEO and executive director at the NJCPA.
