NJCPA President Wins NJBIA Leonard C. Johnson Award

Alan D. Sobel, CPA, CGMA, 2020/21 NJCPA president and managing member of SobelCo, LLC, has received the New Jersey Business and Industry Association’s (NJBIA) 2020 Leonard C. Johnson Award, recognizing his dedicated service as an advocate for New Jersey employers and his longtime leadership.

Alan was selected as this year’s recipient due to his “persistence and tenacity in getting the pass-through legislation across the finish line.” He helped small and midsize businesses in New Jersey alleviate the negative impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act’s cap on state and local tax deductions by recognizing a way for pass-through businesses to pay New Jersey income taxes at the entity level instead of at the personal level. Alan worked with New Jersey legislators and the NJCPA to inform Governor Murphy’s office about the initiative, leading to the signage of the Pass-Through Business Alternative Income Tax Act into law on Jan. 13, 2020.

The prestigious Leonard C. Johnson Award is given to those individuals who work to improve New Jersey’s economic vitality, encourage job growth, streamline government and make businesses feel welcome again in New Jersey.

“We could not be more pleased to hear that Alan is being recognized for his foresight and commitment to assist the New Jersey business community by bringing about the new pass-through act,” said Ralph Albert Thomas, CPA (DC), CGMA, CEO and executive director at the NJCPA.
