OVERVIEW

An employee handbook can be both a guidebook and a shield for a business. Using sample policies, employment law attorney, Michael A. Shadiack of Connell Foley LLP, will lead an in-person interactive handbook clinic to provide attendees with information for drafting and updating work rules as well as leave and benefit policies, and what language should be included and excluded per the law.

Michael A. Shadiack is a partner in and chair of Connell Foley LLP's Labor & Employment Law Group. He represents privately-owned businesses, international corporations, non-profit organizations and institutions of higher education in the full range of employment law related issues. This includes proactive and preventative compliance counseling to employers on personnel and benefit issues, with a focus on assisting them in making employment-related decisions intended to avoid or reduce the risks of litigation. In addition, Mike efficiently drafts practical employee handbooks customized to the employer’s specific business practices, and reviews employee handbooks from a compliance standpoint to identify any necessary legal updates. Mike’s practice also involves defending employers in litigation in state and federal courts and before state and federal administrative agencies.

The author of numerous articles and professional materials, Mike has presented as a featured speaker, both nationally and regionally, on traditional and cutting-edge employment topics. He conducts on-site management training programs on behalf of employers on topics such as: preventing workplace harassment, hiring and firing best practices, avoiding retaliation and discrimination in the workplace, managing employee medical leaves, implementing employee discipline, and formulating effective employee handbooks. He has been recognized for his professional, civic, and volunteer achievements, and is a multi-year recipient of the New Jersey Super Lawyers recognition, and the Best Lawyers in America recognition in the area of employment law.
